moovel and BART to Pilot New Mobile Ticketing App for Airport Trips

5 December 2018

By offering a discount for groups traveling to and from SFO and OAK, BART seeks to increase public transit ridership at local airports

San Francisco, Calif.—Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and moovel, the leading provider of mobile ticketing applications in North America, announced today the launch of a new mobile ticketing app that will provide discounted fares for groups riding to and from Bay Area airports. The app provides a 25% discount on BART fares for groups of two or more traveling to or from SFO or OAK. The BART to Airport app – BART’s first use of a mobile ticketing solution – leverages the latest version of moovel’s mobility technology and functions as a one-year pilot aimed at increasing BART ridership to and from the San Francisco and Oakland airports.

“The app offers the convenience of no paper tickets to keep track of, no need to carry cash and no need to wait in line at a ticket machine with the hassle of purchasing multiple tickets,” said BART Chief Information Officer Ravi Misra. “Our riders have been asking for mobile ticketing, but our fare gates don’t communicate with phones. The BART to Airport app will let us test how a visual inspection could work at BART while also encouraging increased ridership to the airport.”

The app utilizes the latest version of moovel’s mobility app, which includes a variety of payment methods, advanced purchasing features and an updated user experience and design. BART will also have access to moovel’s Transaction and Operations Management System (TOMS), which supports a diverse range of back-end services to increase operational efficiencies for ticket validation and business intelligence.

“When you’re traveling with a group, getting to and from the airport can be an expensive, stressful experience,” said moovel North America CEO Nat Parker. “The new BART mobile app will help transit riders save money and allow them to pay for their trip right from their phone. We are proud to be working with a fantastic set of partners to strengthen public transit in the Bay Area and improve the customer experience.”

BART and moovel spokespeople are available for interviews about how the app will make it easier and more cost effective for BART riders to reach and return home from the airport. To schedule an interview, please contact Alicia Trost at ATrost@bart.gov or visit www.bart.gov/apps to find out more.
