moovel and MDOT MTA Power First Mobile Ticketing App for Baltimore Region

28 September 2018

Riders now can purchase BaltimoreLink, MARC Train and Commuter Bus tickets with CharmPass

Portland, Ore. September 28, 2018— Maryland area transit riders now can search, book and pay for their bus, subway, light rail and commuter train fares on MDOT MTA’s CharmPass, a new mobile ticketing application. In addition to providing riders with a convenient mobile solution for transit travel, CharmPass leverages the latest version of moovel’s mobility app, which includes additional payment methods, advanced purchasing features and a new user experience and design.

CharmPass allows riders to search, book and pay for multiple MDOT MTA transit services and store tickets in one central application to make easy connections through the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. regions. MARC Train and Commuter Bus riders using CharmPass also will have access to more flexible purchasing options, including the ability to take advantage of the entire cycle of a weekly and monthly pass based on the original purchase date versus being restricted to a fixed calendar. In addition, Local Bus, Metro SubwayLink and Light RailLink CharmPass riders now can transfer within the 90-minute ticket expiration window for a more cost-effective ride.

As part of the mobility platform, MDOT MTA also will have access to moovel’s Transaction and Operations Management System (TOMS), which supports a diverse range of back-end services to increase operational efficiencies for ticket validation and business intelligence. MDOT MTA also will have access to FareShare, a hub for managing and distributing transportation benefits and reduced fares.

“MDOT MTA provides a range of transit services for residents, commuters and tourists across dense city limits, and the launch of CharmPass marks an exciting milestone for us,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “We’re thrilled to integrate everything into one simple digital experience that riders can access anytime to enhance the transit experience and advance our sustainability goals.”

With CharmPass riders now can:

  • Purchase fares directly on their smartphones any time, without waiting in line at a ticket vending machine
  • Buy and access multiple MDOT MTA tickets and passes from one phone, making it simple to travel with family and friends
  • Pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX, SmartBenefits and split payment between family, friends and payment providers
  • Access increased security options, including Touch ID (iOS) and Face ID (iPhone X) before completing a purchase
  • Easily navigate the user-interface and repurchase previous tickets with one easy “buy again” button
  • Retrieve tickets from an old device to a new one via “one easy tap,” if a device gets lost or stolen
